Baldasare Forestiere’s Underground Gardens, Fresno.

August 26, 2009

I used to be an avid watcher of California’s Gold, with Huell Howser when we were first moved to California to find alternative places of interest to explore. In one of the programmes Huell visited the gold mine in Julian, Southern California and then he went to Forestiere’s Underground Gardens, Fresno. Both of these underground places were dug out by hand in the early 20th century.

As a family we’d visited the gold mine when we’d camped at Palomar Mountain but I knew nothing about the underground gardens and always wanted to visit them. We tried last year on our road trip to Washington, but it was closed. But at the end of July, Anne and I went to visit our friend Deirdre for a couple of nights, in Reedley, CA, near Fresno. The three of us were able to visit the gardens before Anne and I returned home.

My photos aren’t great but if you are in the area and have an hour to kill I think they are a nice place to visit. Forestiere’s nephew maintains the gardens, and restoration work is being done. Its an hour guided tour and on a hot afternoon it was wonderful to walk around the cool tunnels and find these wonderful gardens.IMG_1190 Anne disappearing into one of the tunnels.
